It can also be used in intensive care or in the operating theatre.
The sides of the Wedge are 45 degrees. Depending on how close to the patient the Wedge is placed, the patient may rest at 30 degrees or higher. Some Bariatric patients may be more comfortable at more than 30 degrees, so this wedge will allow for a larger angle and give good support to the patient.
About the Bed Wedge – Bariatric – Heat Sealed
This Bed Wedge is made from a very firm foam, so it should not crush under the weight of most bariatric people. The foam is convoluted on the sides, so when it is next to the patient, the surface is softer and the convolutions will help with blood circulation.
The cover is made from a soft breathable, four way stretch material, that is Heat Sealed for infection control.
There is a wide flap along one edge which can be folded under. The advantage of this flap is to allow air to move slightly when someone is lying on it. This means that it doesn’t feel like lying on a balloon.
Some Uses For The Bed Wedge
Back Support:
When sitting up in bed, the Wedge can be placed behind the person’s back. This provides good support for the lower back/posterior to lean against. A normal pillow can also be used for upper back support.
Anti-Slide Wedge:
When the person is sitting up in bed, place the Wedge under the legs hard up against the groin. The Wedge will comfortably help the person to stay in position sitting up, and help prevent them sliding back down the bed. This is particularly useful as it can save the Carers having to constantly lift patients back into position.
Anti-Roll Wedge:
This may help people who need to sleep on their side but will roll onto their backs. Place the wedge against their back. This will be comfortable, and will prevent them from rolling onto their back. The Wedge is very stable and small enough to go under the bed clothes.
Cradle Wedge:
To take the weight of the blankets off the person’s feet, place the Wedge at the bottom of the bed, under the covers.
Please consider Pelican’s other various sizes of
Wedges
(sold separately)
before deciding which is best for you.
The full range of the Pelican Bed Wedges consists of:
Small
Small – 1/2 Length
Small – 3/4 Length
Small – Extra Long
Small – Angled
Large
Large – 1/2 Length
Large – 3/4 Length
Large – Extra Long
Large – Angled
Extra Large
Sidelying
Bariatric – Heat Sealed
Our full range of bariatric products
can be found here

Item # 1360
Material: 4-way stretch waterproof material, with 100% heat sealed seams.
Foam: High density convoluted foam on all 3 sides.

The Leg Support is a light-weight foot stool which puts no pressure on the heels. This means there is no pressure on the heels. Some Patients with large, heavy legs could have a slight pressure on the heels, although by adjusting the position of the Leg Support, this pressure may be prevented. The Leg Support has a series of ridges to provide a soft convoluted surface for the calves to rest on. Foot-drop may be prevented by resting the feet on the angled front foot-rest, and as the Leg Support is made from foam, the Patient can press against the foot-rest section to exercise the feet.
When in use, please note that the Leg Support can be tilted up a bit, to provide alternative pressure points on the leg. During the course of a day, a Patient may like the support altered from the normal position to a variety of different angles. Some oedema Patients may need extra height for resting their legs, and use the support upside-down, thus losing the advantage of the leg and feet supports. With some badly contracted Patients, it may be better to use the support back to front but this can only be determined after observation of the Patient’s posture by nursing staff.
This product is to help with the prevention of pressure sores. (Pannus is a commonly used term for a
panniculus
, or abdominal apron.)
There are two designs of the Pannus Slings. The traditional design, which does not have any opening Flaps, and the design with Flaps that can be opened for cleaning under the pannus as much as possible.
Both Slings have an internal layer of Thermoregulating Material, which may help the Patient to keep their skin dry, however there is no guarantee it will help all patients. The Sling material is designed to wick moisture away from the body, so this can also help keep the area dry.
About the Pannus Apron Sling
The Apron Sling may be left in position under the pannus during the night, providing the Patient is sleeping on their back. If they are in a chair during the day, it may also be possible to leave the Sling under the pannus.
Two sizes are available, and can be ordered with or without the inspection Flaps:
100cm / 39″ width, available with or without 2 Flaps
145cm / 57″ width, available with or without 3 Flaps
To Use
Before starting make sure this procedure is suitable with the Patient’s condition. A suggested way to place the Apron Sling under the pannus apron is by using a
Bed Slide Sheet
folded in half once, and then in half again.
Place the Apron Sling inside the middle of the folded Bed Slide Sheet and then place your fingers under the foam padded Flap sewn to the Sling and gently slide the Apron Sling under the pannus, as far as possible. The Sling is deep enough so when in position, the Hook & Loop Tape opening at the end should not be under the actual pannus.
Secure the webbing straps to each side of the bed frame, wrapping them around the bed rail where there is a support strut going to the mattress base. This will stop the webbing slipping along the frame when the Sling is being lifted. The female buckle slides freely on the webbing. The male buckle is put inside the female and the surplus webbing is pulled tight. Alternatively, the webbing could be secured on the bed frame at the head end of the bed.
If possible, use a ceiling hoist that is located above the Patient’s stomach. If using a mobile hoist, as the hoist is raised up, it may want to pull slightly to the side. Be prepared for this. Some experimenting is needed for individual Patients to find the best position for the hoist.
Once the pannus has been lifted up, the exposed skin under the pannus can be cleaned and dried. Then the Hook & Loop Tape can be undone on the Flaps to enable the Carer to clean and dry the underside of the pannus. Only undo one Flap at a time. Pull the Sling clear of the skin to access the areas where the pannus was resting on the Sling. It may be possible to undo the all of the Flaps to allow air to circulate. However, this will depend on the nature of the pannus. When doing the Hook & Loop Tape back up again, hold it away from the pannus, so you are not pressing into the pannus.
If available, place a clean Sling under the pannus. This is so that it will be ready to lift the pannus again after the original Sling has been removed.
Due to the nature of how this product used, we cannot guarantee that it will work for all people with a pannus apron.
ALTERNATIVE OR RELATED PRODUCTS
Bed Roller Sheet
Leg Lifter
Leg Lifter – Bariatric Oeadema
Sit, Slide & Stand Pad – Bariatric
Slide & Turn Hoist Sheet

Item #
Width
Height
Number of Flaps
6950
100cm / 39″
55cm / 22″
None
6950F
100cm / 39″
55cm / 22″
2
6951
145cm / 57″
55cm / 22″
None
6951F
145cm / 57″
55cm / 22″
3
Weight testing:
We weight tested with a ‘laboratory’ pannus consisting of foam padding and weights to 91kg(200 lbs).
Research shows the maximum weight of a pannus can be 54.43kg(120lbs), so we tested to over 1.5 times the maximum weight.

The Patient Turning Straps are designed to help turn someone who cannot roll onto their side when on their back on the floor. The Straps are particularly helpful for large and bariatric patients.
To Use
Place the Patient Turning Straps and Wedges on the floor next to the person. Make sure the ‘This Way Up’ label is showing, and ensure the head will be on the wedge when turned. Slide one Grey Strap under the neck to under the opposite armpit. Then place the other Strap under the thighs, so the Strap goes up the opposite hip of the person. To avoid shearing on the person, ensure the Grey Straps are not twisted and position them with the red webbing loops away from the person
Cross the Straps over the person’s chest and pull at an angle, so the Strap under the shoulder is pulled from the Rescuer standing or kneeling opposite the fallen person’s legs, and the Strap under the legs is pulled by the Rescuer standing by the person’s head.
The person’s arms and legs should be positioned to allow log rolling. In particular their arm should not block the turn. Remember when turning someone, the people pulling are only turning the person onto their side, they are not lifting the full body weight, so be careful not to turn them onto their stomach. The person in charge of the turn, should say out loud ‘Ready, Brace, Turn’ or similar instructions, to ensure the turn is synchronised.
The red webbing loops are long enough to allow for 2 or 3 Rescuers on each of the two Straps. The
ResQsheet Extension Straps
can be attached to the red webbing loops, if extra length is required for more people to help with the turning.
When the person is on their side, a lifting device can be placed under them. This may be a Lifting Sling, Emergency Stretcher, or an air jack. Log roll the person again if necessary onto their other side to take the air jack or sling material out. The person should be in the middle of the air jack or sling. To do this the Patient Turning Straps can be placed on the opposite side of them. This way, they can be rolled the opposite way.
It may be possible to use a hoist to do the pulling. Generally the legs on a mobile hoist will prevent it from getting close enough to the person. The person may be able to bend their legs to allow one hoist leg to go under the person’s legs. Then place the other hoist leg under the fallen person’s neck if their head is on a pillow. If this is possible, still cross the Grey Straps over on the spreader bar as when turning by hand. Have training before using on a patient to make sure your Hoist is suitable.
The Patient Turning Straps can be used on the floor or possibly on a bed. Just make sure that the bed and mattress are stable enough to allow for them to be used. Your Manual Handling Trainer may alter our guide for individual patients, staff or the type of Hanger/Spreader Bar.
Place the Positioning Sling on the empty bed with the Red Webbing at the head end of the bed. There is red stitching sewn at both ends of the Positioning Sling, indicating the middle of the Sling. To position the Sling under the patient:
Log roll the patient
Use another standard Lifting Sling to lower the patient on to the Sling on the bed
Adjust the length of the Lifting Straps to suit the Hanger Bar and the size of the patient. All the Lifting Straps should have the same tension. After doing this adjustment, you may not need to change it again unless the Hoist or patient are different. When first lifting, make sure all the Straps are lifting equally and if necessary, make some more adjustments. Remember to make sure the patient’s head is held correctly and is comfortable. Some facilities may place a pillow under the head, so it is lifted up by the Sling. It is more comfortable if the patient crosses their arms on their chest when lifting.
Sometimes it may be necessary to reposition the patient nearer the side of the bed, to allow room for them to turn onto their side. Use the Lifting Straps on both sides to lift the patient to the side of the bed and lower the Hoist. It may be easier to move the empty bed, compared to pushing a Hoist holding a bariatric patient. If the Hoist does not lift high enough, lower the bed so the Hoist & Sling takes the patient’s weight. When preparing to turn to their side, leave the Lifting Loop connected on the opposite side to the direction of the turn and remove the Lifting Straps on the side the patient will turn to. Spread the Sling out so it is not bundled up under the patient after they have been turned. Remember to move the patient’s arms and legs into position before turning, then raise the Hoist to turn the patient. Pelican make
Bariatric Bed Wedges
to help keep patients on their side. Once the patient is on their side or even if on their back, then the Lifting Straps are removed from the Hanger Bar. The Lifting Straps can be stored in the pockets sewn to the webbing. These are provided so the Lifting Straps do not hang down the side of the bed, as they may become caught up when the bed is raised and lowered, or even be a tripping hazard.
If you lift with the brakes off, the Hoist may creep forward until the spreader bar is directly above the patient. If the brakes are on when lifting, the patient can be dragged towards the Hoist. They may then possibly swing excessively from it. When lowering with the brakes off, after the webbing has been taken off the hooks, the Hoist can be quickly moved out of the way.
About the Positioning Sling – Bariatric
This product is made using our All Day Sling Material. This material is a lightweight breathable nylon, that is also used in other Pelican products that patients can sleep on. As patients are able to sleep on the Sling, this can save a lot of difficult manual handling. If the material is creased under the patient, a modern pressure relief mattress should allow for this. Using the Sling when sleeping, reduces manual handling a lot as it is easier to turn the patient more frequently to help prevent pressure sores.
The Positioning Sling may also help when cleaning a pannus. By turning a patient to their side, it may be possible to move the pannus to clean under it on one side, and then after turning them to the other side, the rest of the pannus can be cleaned.
If you want to use this product in the bath, we can custom-make it in a Blue Mesh material. This material can be ‘pat’ dried with a towel, while the patient is lifted out of the shower trolley bath.
Removable battens are at each end of this Sling to help prevent the material from enclosing the feet and head when lifting. These can be removed if not needed, but can be left in position when washing. We supply spare a batten with the Sling, just in case one gets lost or is broken.
ALTERNATIVE OR RELATED PRODUCTS
Bed Roller Sheet
Leg/Arm Sling – Heat Sealed
Leg Lifter – Bariatric Oeadema
Pannus Apron Sling
Patient Turning Straps
ResQsheet – Bariatric Size
Sit, Slide & Stand Pad – Bariatric
Slide & Turn Hoist Sheet

Safe Working Load:
500kg / 1,102lbs (In accordance with ISO 10535:2011)
ARTG:
99879
GMDN:
40535
Attachment Method:
Metal hook coathanger type hoists
Item #
Description
5085
Standard – Nylon material
5085TR
Thermoregulating Material inside Nylon material
5085P
Polyester Material
5085M
Blue Mesh Material
Material
Photo
Type
Notes
All Day Sling Material
Nylon
A strong, thin material with a Rip Stop thread in the material, to help reduce or prevent ripping. Daily bed making is as normal. If there is an emergency, then the webbing straps are removed from their pockets and quickly done up around the mattress and the patient. The head and foot end pulling straps are also taken out from under the mattress. The mattress and the patient are then lowered onto the floor for very fast and safe evacuation. The patient is protected by their mattress and they can be easily taken down stairs to safety.
After evacuation, the patient can be left still cocooned in the ResQsheet which may be helpful with patients who are liable to wander. The Cross Straps are sewn across the full width of the ResQsheet to provide extra security in case the strong nylon material should tear on a rough surface, i.e. driveways, roads, etc.
Special Features
Special Press Studs (Patent Applied For) are on the Pulling Straps and the Cross Straps. By doing the Press Studs up, the webbing will be kept in place to help prevent the Pulling Straps falling off the ends of the bed. There have been occasions when these straps have been tangled on attachments to the bed and have delayed a fast evacuation. The Cross Straps also have Press Studs to stop the straps falling between the bed side rail and the bed base.
Two pieces of Miracle Grip Rubber material are sewn to each side, at the top and bottom. A trend with hospital beds is to no longer have small metal bars to hold a mattress in position. This means that the mattress may slip when someone gets into or out of bed. If you find that using this product may contribute to the mattress sliding on the bed frame, we suggest using our
Anti Slide Mattress Sticks
or
Anti Slide Mattress Pad
.
There are many names by which this type of item is known. Some include: Evacuation Sheets, Fire Sheets, Fire Rescue Sheets, Fire Evacuation Sheets, Fire Blankets, or Ski Sheets.
COMPARISON BETWEEN OUR RESQ PRODUCTS
Click
here
to view the Features List for the range of Pelican evacuation devices.
To Install
The ResQsheet is positioned under the mattress so that the ‘This Side Up’ label is on top. Place the four elastic straps over each corner of the mattress to help keep the ResQsheet in position when bed making. The Cross Straps should be folded into the pockets provided, with the Press Studs fastened ready for easy access in an emergency. The Pulling Straps should be secured in place with the Press Studs.
To Use
Pull the Cross Straps out of the pockets and join the buckle with the strap from the opposite pocket over the patient and bed clothes. A pillow may be placed on the patient’s chest and another across the legs, under the Cross Straps to further protect the patient.
Pull the Cross Straps tight to cocoon the patient, complete with sheets and blankets still inside the mattress. Take out the Head and Foot Pulling Straps from under the mattress. Lower the bed as far as possible. Then use the Straps to lower the patient and mattress off the bed and slide along the floor by using the long Pulling Straps at either end.
ResQSheet Extension Straps
are available which can fit to any of the Pelican ResQ products to allow for more people to pull.
The ResQsheet – Bariatric, is made from a strong white nylon material which is easy to see in the dark when taken outside if an evacuation takes place at night.
Testing
The materials used to make the ResQsheets are the same as we use for our Lifting Slings. When doing NATA Testing, the Slings lifted 1,000kg / 2200lbs without failing.
When carrying out ‘In House’ testing, the ResQsheets were pulled at a fast walking speed on carpet and concrete. Loads of 203kg / 447lbs, and 302kg / 665lbs were tested. The test results can vary on different grades of carpet depending on the pile and underlay. Therefore these results are just an indication of the reduction. The Initial Force was when the ResQsheets were on the floor. After taking the mattress off the bed, and starting to slide straight away, the initial force should be less.
Number of people pulling
Weight pulled
Initial load for each person pulling on Carpet
Initial load each person pulling on painted Concrete
Four
203kg / 447lbs
24.5kg / 54lbs each
19kg / 41.8lbs each
Four
302kg / 665lbs
28.5kg / 62.8lbs each
21.5kg / 47lbs each
Plan Escape Routes for Fire Evacuation
Do not have furniture that may impede pulling the mattress and patient down a corridor. Make sure that there is enough space to leave the room and to turn in the corridor.
Most fires start in laundries and kitchens. Make sure that you can evacuate the building without passing these high risk areas. Have alternative escape routes if the fire originates from a room.
All staff should have regular fire drills, so that in an emergency they are familiar with evacuation procedures.
All facilities must have full instructions in the use of evacuation equipment and evacuation routes from their own trainers.
ALTERNATIVE OR RELATED PRODUCTS
Bed Roller Sheet
Bed Wedge – Bariatric
Leg/Arm Sling – Heat Sealed
Leg Lifter – Bariatric Oeadema
Pannus Apron Sling
Patient Turning Straps
Positioning Sling – Bariatric
Sit, Slide & Stand Pad – Bariatric
Slide & Turn Hoist Sheet

Item #
220B
Patent Applied for Number:
2013901974
Safe Working Load (SWL):
450kg
Note:
There is no Standard for this product, therefore we have adopted the testing requirements as set out in International Standard ISO 10535:2011:
Hoists for the transfer of disabled persons – Requirements and test methods
. This Standard covers testing for mechanical lifting hoists and associated lifting Slings. It includes a method for obtaining a SWL for a lifting Sling which lifts a person’s entire weight, which Pelican’s range of Slings adhere to. We use the same materials, thread and method of stitching our Slings, as we do for the ResQ products. An important difference is that the ResQ products are designed to slide, not be lifted, so the SWL stated above could theoretically be increased. Because people’s weight and size may be distributed differently between the chest, stomach and legs, it may be possible that the Cross Straps do not fit some bariatric people. If possible, we recommend this is tested before an emergency occurs. If this is the case, please contact us as we may be able to supply extension Cross Straps. Then lift up the top section at about half way, and pull it towards the front of the chair to let it overhang the front of the chair. The Carers should stand on both sides of the chair and hold the webbing loops, so when the patient sits down on the front section of the pad, they will not slip forward and off the chair. The patient should assist by pushing with their legs to slide back, while the Carers pull the webbing back. If necessary two Carers can slide the patient on each side. Therefore a total of four Carers would be helping slide the patient back into the chair.
When the patient is sitting at the back of the chair, the gold webbing strap should be fastened behind the chair to stop the pad sliding forward. Please remember the original Slide & Turn Sheet has been used in this manner for several years. We have not had any comments about them affecting the Patient’s skin or any pressure problems. As it is now possible to use a hoist to turn the Patient, it will be even easier to turn larger Patients, minimising risks of manual handling injuries to the Carers.
Air regulated mattresses may have plastic sheets, urine absorbent pads and normal cotton sheets on top of the air mattress. These may reduce the benefits of the mattress, but they are still necessary for hygiene and skin integrity. If the Hoist Sheet is used there will be minimal touching of the Patient, compared to turning manually.
Some facilities deflate the air mattress when turning a Patient as this will make the turning easier.
